2018 Summer Plans

Hey everyone! It’s almost time to get out and start exploring again. We had a busy winter trying to prepare for summer and are so excited for what’s ahead this year.

Those of you following our story know that we’ve been trying to clean house for a couple reasons. We have accumulated so much stuff in our little house over the last (almost) four years that we’ve lived here. It’s crazy to think that we’ve already been here that long. But we started here with rather minimal clutter since we had been in Japan for a couple years and had to downsize prior to leaving. We did keep some stuff in my parents’ basement, but that was mostly the essentials or stuff that would be expensive to replace. Unfortunately, we just manage to do like many other Americans and accumulate like it’s going out of style. Our mission to downsize came with a positive side effect. By removing nonessential items from the house, we were able to sell a lot of it and make some extra money. We’ve thrown out hundreds of items and gained hundreds of dollars. Nice!

I think we made $40 off this stuff!

Through downsizing and making a few extra dollars, we are hoping to be able to get a camper and spend some long weekends out with our young kids. We were able to get a truck this winter after trading off our Kia Sorento that was a great car but just didn’t have the guts to drag a trailer. Our new ride is a 2017 Ram 1500 4×4 with the 5.7 Hemi. It’s a crew cab, which has a huge amount of room in the back seat and is so helpful with kids. There’s a few other things that we might go over in a separate post or video someday.

It’s got running boards and a license plate now.

We asked a question a few weeks back about where readers wanted us to go this summer. We realize that Nebraska isn’t exactly a popular destination for many families, but there are a lot of things around that maybe people would like more info about. The winner of the poll was Chimney Rock in the panhandle. It’s a famous landmark but not really on the way to anything. We are going to do our very best to get out there this summer and take you along for the ride!

Chimney Rock. The world’s largest railyard in North Platte. Indian Cave State Park. Do you think we could make it to all 3?

We’ve got a list of a number of places to go this year, including our first trip out of state as a family of four. It’s going to be tough since we don’t have a camper yet, but we’ll give it a go.

We also are planning a very exciting trip to Omaha that my awesome wife planned for my birthday. More on that later, but you’ll want to stay tuned. It’s going to be pretty fun and something very unexpected.

What are you excited for this summer?
